In a glorious celebration of women of color, the magazine announced on Tuesday that its newest issue would be all about the beauty of diversity — and it does not disappoint. The cover features models Dilone, Imaan Hammam, and Aamito Lagum, each absolutely glowing and looking totally flawless. And within the magazine itself, there are words of wisdom, solidarity, and brilliance from 41 women of color who were asked to tell “the story of their lives through their skin,” and why celebrating diversity is so beautiful and important.

“Our skin is so much more than a reflection in the mirror,” the magazine wrote on Instagram. “Our skin is the metaphor that defines how we’re seen—and how we see ourselves. For our April 2017 issue… Allure asked 41 women of color to tell us the story of their lives through their skin—and skin tone. Because our skin can be both a vulnerability and a defense. But most importantly, it can be a source of celebration.”

During a Q&A on Facebook Live on Tuesday, editor-in-chief Michelle Lee went into detail about the inspiration behind the issue, before discussing one image in particular from the cover spread that was especially meaningful to her. In the photo, which shows the three cover models posing in swimsuits, Imaan’s stretch marks aren’t retouched at all — something Michelle says was extremely important to her.

“She has a little bit of stretch marks right here,” she said. “And I love, love, love that we’re showing that. We’re not pointing it out in the issue (even though I’m pointing it out) but I think that — to me — that is real beauty. We’re all real. We’re not retouching the hell out of everyone so everybody looks fake.”
